Known as the 'Siol of Gilchrist'- the posterity of Gilchrist - the Ogilvie trace a descent from Earl Gillechrist of Angus, who was granted the Barony of Ogilvie, in the parish of Glamis, Forfarshire, by William the Lyon in 1163. In 1177 he gave these lands to his younger son, Gillebride, who took the name of 'Ogilvie', or 'Ogilvy' from these lands - with 'Ogilvie' stemming from 'Ocel-fa', meaning 'high plain'.
