Descended from a Flemish nobleman, the clan was granted lands in Moray, in the north of Scotland. They became firmly identified with Scotland's freedom, with clan chief Sir Andrew Murray fighting at the battle of Stirling Bridge alongside William Wallace in 1297, while Sir George Murray was Lieutenant General of Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite army during the 1745 Rising.
