The clan's founder, also known as Macintosh, was reputed to have been a son of MacDulf, ancestor of the ancient earls of Fife who held lands in Moray. In 1672, Lachlan MacKintosh was named Chief of the great confederation of clans known as Clan Chattan, and in the following century, Macintoshes fought in support of the Jacobite cause in both the 1715 and 1745 Risings.
