The clan was a significant part of the large clan confederation known as Clan Chattan, and they were involved in a number of violent battles, notably the notorious Battle of the Clans at Perth's North Inch in 1396, where they came very close to annihilation. During the seventeenth century, a branch of the clan also participated in combat for France.
